Do not remove dentures for the first 24 hours. If dentures are removed within 24 hours, you may not be able to re-insert them due to swelling. After 24 hours remove denture. Rinse denture under cold tap water, and rinse mouth with warm salt water (1 tsp salt to ½ cup warm water). Gently swish for 5 minutes every 2-3 hours for 4-6 days. Alternate ice pack from one side of the face to the other about every 20 minutes for 4-5 hours. Sleep with dentures in mouth for first 10 days to 2 weeks. Thereafter, begin sleeping with dentures out of mouth. Soak over night in cold tap water. On a daily basis clean dentures soap and water. Soak dentures in a denture cleanser once every week or two as needed.
Small sharp bone fragments may work up through the gums during healing. These are not roots; if annoying, return to this office for their simple removal. You may experience excessive salivation and speech difficulty with your new immediate dentures. These conditions are temporary and most patients learn to overcome them by the time they return for their 2 week post-op visit.
Please follow these procedures as closely as possible and take your medications as prescribed. If you find that you are sensitive or allergic to anything we have recommended for you to use, do not take or use that product and contact us immediately.
Do not expect your immediate dentures to have perfect fit and retention. The rapid swelling and shrinkage of the tissues during the first 2 weeks will make your new dentures awkward and difficult to keep in. After 7-10 days you may use a denture adhesive to aid in keeping your dentures in place. At your 2 week post-op visit we may place a temporary liner for sizing. You should expect the tissues to continue shrinking over the next 6-12 months. During this time, call the office when you feel it is necessary for temporary liners. There will be a fee of $35.00 per denture each time for temporary liners within the first 6 months. After the bone shrinkang is complete, you should make an appointment to have the denture checked for possible permanent reline at the cost of $285 per denture.
If you have any complication which you feel is not normal considering the amount of extraction and/or surgical work performed, you may contact us by calling (386)738-2006. If we are not in the office, leave a message on the answering machine, we will return the call as soon as possible.
We would like to have you return for your first post-surgical visit approximately 2 weeks after your surgery. Please call the office to schedule your 2 week visit if it was not scheduled at your surgical appointment.
Semi liquid to soft diet for approximately 1 week as tolerated. Gradually work up to a more solid diet.
