A fear of going
to the dentist is not uncommon. Many patients feel
anxious or afraid while sitting in a dental chair.
Some even put off seeing a dentist because of this
fear or the experience of a painful procedure in the
past. In other cases, patients have an uncontrollable
gag reflex or have experienced difficulties in getting
numb. For these and many other reasons, patients put
off dental treatments they need or desire, risking
their oral health and the general health of their
smiles. If you are one of the many who suffer from
anxiety or fear of seeing a dentist, sedation dentistry
may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
Dr. Rajiv Patel offers sedation dentistry to make
the patient as comfortable as possible, in order to
ensure a more successful treatment. |

| What is Sedation Dentistry ? |
| Sedation Dentistry,
also known as Conscious Sedation or Relaxation Dentistry,
refers to the way dentists manage pain and anxiety
during dental appointments. Unlike General Anesthesia,
where a patient is completely unconscious and unable
to respond, patients under Conscious Sedation, are
able to respond to commands and breath on their own.
Patients who are sedated respond to verbal commands,
however they are relaxed enough not to feel any pain
or discomfort. Most patients are so relaxed, in fact,
that they claim they were sleeping through the entire
procedure. And at the end of the procedure, you will
have very little or no memory of what was done.
|
| There
are 3 primary ways that Sedation is administered in
the Dental Office:
1. IV
Sedation also known as Deep Conscious
Sedation is usually used by Oral Surgeons and
General Dentists with specialized training and special
certification. With this type of sedation, medications
are administered directly into the blood stream. The
greatest advantage of IV Sedation is that if someone
is not sedated enough, the doctor can administer more
medication and the effects are instantaneous. IV Sedation
is not used commonly in most dental offices because
of the specialized advanced training required and
the requirements for certification by the State Board
of Dentistry. The drugs used for IV Sedation are more
effective then the same drugs taken orally. There
is a more profound amnesia associated with this technique.
2. Enteral
Conscious Sedation "Orally
Administered Sedation", sometimes called
"Sedation Dentistry" is administered by
taking a pill. All body functions remain normal and
the person is able to breathe on their own. The patient
will often fall asleep. Some degree of amnesia is
common. The disadvantage with this method of sedation,
is that the level of sedation for each person is not
predictable.
3. Inhalation
Conscious Sedation, Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen
Sedation also known as "laughing gas".
This is the most frequently used sedation method used
in dentistry. All bodily functions remain normal and
the person is able to breathe on their own. The patient
will often fall asleep and experience some degree
of amnesia about what happened during their dental
appointment. Inhalation Sedation has been used by
dentists for many years. |
| Why is Sedation Dentistry ? |
A fear of going to see a dentist can
compromise your oral health and hygiene, but Dr. Rajiv
Patel offers Sedation Dentistry as safe practice that
can help you overcome your fear and enjoy a healthy,
beautiful smile. Dr. Rajiv Patel knows that IV sedation
is the answer to many patents’ fears. He and his
staff are trained and certified to provide this service
for your comfort. Because, the more relaxed you are
during a visit to the dentist, the less likely it is
that you will experience trauma and pain from the procedure.
Here
is how it works: Step
1 - Call for appointment.
One of our staff members
can answer all your questions and help yon feel more
comfortable coming for your initial visit. And rest
assured, we have successfully helped many patients like
yourself.
Step 2 - Initial visit and treatment plan discussion
visit.
We welcome the opportunity
to get to know you. At your initial appointment your
dental concerns and dental desires will be addressed.
Necessary diagnostic records like charting the existing
conditions of your teeth and other oral tissues, Digital
X-rays, diagnostic casts and photographic images will
be taken. The need for sedation will be justified and
established.
At the next visit Dr. Patel
will explain to you in detail the present condition
of your teeth and oral tissues and will present a detailed
treatment plan and viable alternatives.Once the treatment
plan and the sequence of the procedures is mutually
agreed upon, Dr. Patel will give you the consent and
pre-op instructions for the sedation and dental procedure
to be performed. Generally the fees for Sedation and
the dental treatment for the planned appointment will
be collected at this time.
Step 3 - Arriving for treatment.
Some one will need to accompany
you to our office. Dr. Rajiv Patel will review your
medical history to ensure it is still a safe alternative
for you. Then Dr. Patel or one of the staff members
will start an IV in your arm. Dr. Patel will administer
the medication for sedation and in matter of minutes
you will be very relaxed and ready for the dental procedures.
You will be continually monitored for B.P. , blood Oxygen
saturation and respiration with the use of monitors
during the entire procedure in order to ensure you experience
no discomfort.
After the treatment is performed, there is usually a
recovery period of only about 15 to 20 minutes; and
most patients are working the next day. You will be
amazed at how much can be accomplished in such a seemingly
short period of time because you will have very little
or no memory of your visit.
Step 4 - Going home.
Because of the lingering
effects of the sedatives, you will need someone to drive
you home. Post-op instructions and any necessary medications
will be provided to you and your escort. This to ensure
you will continue to be comfortable after your treatment. |
